Storm Claudia Impact: Clean-up Operations Continue as Arctic Blast Approaches

First responders are continuing their efforts to manage widespread inundation triggered by the passing storm.

A significant emergency was announced in the town of Monmouth, southeastern Wales, where residents were rescued or evacuated from waterlogged properties after torrential rain on Friday.

On Sunday, four severe alerts, warning of life-threatening conditions, remained active, alongside 41 flood warnings across England. Water heights on the Monnow River exceeded all-time highs, topping levels recorded during past storms.

Homes, commercial properties, transport networks, and power grids all experienced damage from major water inundation in Welsh regions, officials confirmed.

Data indicated that approximately twenty properties in England were flooded due to the severe conditions, such as properties in Cumbria.

As Storm Claudia moves away, a sharp temperature drop is expected to sweep across the UK, bringing sub-zero conditions and possible wintry precipitation.

Saturday night, the country experienced its coldest night since spring, with mercury readings plunging to -7C in a Scottish location.

A temperature drop of approximately five degrees will change above-average November readings to lower figures nationwide, with peak temperatures on Sunday at about 11C in the southeastern region before further cooling at the start of the week.

"As Storm Claudia retreats, high pressure to the north-west will bring a chilly Arctic air across the country," a meteorologist stated. "This results in much colder weather than recently, and, while generally drier, there is also a potential of snow and ice. Widespread frosts are anticipated, with temperatures falling as low as -7C in certain locations next week, and daily maximums remaining in single figures."

He added, "Combine this with a chilly northern breeze, and there will be a marked chill factor. This represents a significant shift after a prolonged spell of unseasonable warmth."

Health authorities have issued a warning for low temperatures for several English regions from Monday, while flood management bodies have warned that flood risks may continue throughout the coming days.

The low-temperature warning is in place from Monday morning until 8am next Friday, including the East Midlands, western Midlands, northeast, northwest, and Yorkshire and The Humber.
