'Those concluding hours tested every limit': British pair finish epic journey in Down Under after paddling across the vast Pacific

One last sunrise to sunset. Another day battling through the unforgiving ocean. One more day of blistered hands gripping unforgiving oars.

However following over 15,000 kilometers at sea – an epic five-and-a-half-month journey over the Pacific Ocean that included close encounters with whales, defective signaling devices and cocoa supply emergencies – the ocean presented a final test.

Strong 20-knot breezes approaching Cairns kept pushing their compact craft, their boat Velocity, off course from land that was now painfully near.

Supporters anticipated on shore as an expected noon touchdown evolved into afternoon, subsequently 4pm, then dusk. Finally, at 6.42pm, they came alongside Cairns Yacht Club.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe said, at last on firm earth.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we honestly thought we weren't going to make it. We drifted outside the navigational path and considered swimming the remaining distance. To finally be here, following years of planning, just feels incredible."

The Epic Journey Begins

The English women – 28-year-old Rowe and 25-year-old Payne – departed from Lima, Peru on 5 May (an earlier April effort was halted by steering issues).

Over 165 days at sea, they covered approximately 50 sea miles each day, paddling together in daylight, one rowing alone at night while her crewmate slept a bare handful of hours in a cramped cabin.

Survival and Challenges

Sustained by 400 kilograms of dehydrated meals, a seawater purification system and a vessel-based sprout cultivation system, the duo depended upon an inconsistent solar power setup for a fraction of the power they've needed.

Throughout the majority of their expedition through the expansive ocean, they've had no navigation equipment or signaling devices, creating a phantom vessel scenario, hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The women endured 30-foot swells, crossed commercial routes and endured raging storms that, at times, disabled all electrical systems.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Yet they continued paddling, each pull following the last, during intensely warm periods, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They achieved an unprecedented feat as the first all-female pair to row across the South Pacific Ocean, continuously and independently.

Additionally they collected more than £86,000 (179,000 Australian dollars) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Daily Reality at Sea

The duo made every effort to keep in contact with the world beyond their small boat.

On "day 140-something", they reported a "chocolate emergency" – down to their last two bars with still more than 1,600km to go – but permitted themselves the luxury of breaking one open to honor England's rugby team winning the Rugby World Cup.

Personal Insights

Payne, hailing from inland Yorkshire, had not been at sea until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 in a record time.

She has now mastered another ocean. But there were moments, she admitted, when failure seemed possible. Beginning on the sixth day, a path over the planet's biggest sea seemed unachievable.

"Our energy was failing, the desalination tubes ruptured, yet after numerous mends, we achieved an alternative solution and barely maintained progress with little power throughout the remaining journey. Each time problems occurred, we just looked at each other and went, 'of course it has!' Yet we continued forward."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. The remarkable aspect was our collaborative effort, we resolved issues as a team, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she said.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Before her Pacific triumph, she rowed the Atlantic, walked the southwestern English coastline, climbed Mount Kenya and cycled across Spain. Additional challenges probably remain.

"We had such a good time together, and we're eagerly anticipating future expeditions collectively once more. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
